DIGITAL COLLECTIVE CREATION WORKSHOP WITH PURE DATA

This initiative aims to create a Digital Media Group Collective with composers, musicians, sound artists and / or visual and people interested in the field of contemporary music in its broadest sense.

The musical programming environment Pure Data (Pd) will serve as a basis to present and explore a range of techniques and tools for creating experimental electronic music, where participants can manipulate, alter and expand throughout the sessions in search of personal solutions.

The workshop will be divided into two separate blocks of 8 hours each one, spread over weekend schedule. In the first meeting, will introduce the environment Pure Data and empirical work on various techniques of computer music creation. In the second, we will discuss how to transform these techniques in more complex musical instruments, and, with the formation of a band electroacoustic in mind, we introduce aspects of musical interaction with computers, network performance and spatialization.

Block # 1: Bending Software Workshop

The metaphor of ‘bending software’ makes reference to another procedure in the field of contemporary experimental electronic music: circuit bending, whose fundamental principle is to take existing electronic objects (toys, small appliances …) and alter experimental its routes for new and unexpected sounds. Similarly, the bending software workshop will take as its starting point a series of programs (or patches) written in Pd and dedicated to create and modify sounds of various natures. In this way, participants can contact these techniques actively manipulating programs offered for variations on the processes and initial sounds. We believe this is an attractive and simple method for:

(1) To introduce concepts of digital audio, as well as the general features of all programming language oriented sound/music

(2) To expose and develop the fundamentals of programming environment Pure Data,

(3) To present the main techniques of synthesis and sound design, and implementation particularly in Pd, and thus to gain an understanding of the techniques of computer music creation, beyond the specific environment presented.

Block # 2: Electroacoustic Orchestra

The thrust of the second block will be to work towards the formation of a collective creation with the means presented in the first meeting: Ideally, participants will have been familiar with the tools presented, and even have made substantial modifications and additions. Therefore, the contents of the second block will include:

(1) To develop complex musical instruments from the tools presented in the first meeting,

(2) To file and add controllers (hardware) for manual interaction (or at least slightly more physical) with the programs developed / modified

(3) To expand the instruments in multi-user network and exchange data between different participants,

(4) To treat sound spatialization techniques to groups of computers and acoustic sources.

(5) Public presentation in mind, we will work around a series of pieces, and improvisations guided instruments that exploit the resulting materials.

Audience, Requirements and Cost

We invited music students and / or university, composers, musicians, teachers, artists and people interested in the field of music and artistic creation with digital technology.

It is recommended that participants bring their own laptop and headphones.

The number of participants is limited to 12 places by block.

The price per person for each block will be 30 €.

At the beginning of the first meeting will facilitate the necessary installation files of Pure Data, (free software, open source and cross-platform) and digital material (software, pdf’s, audio files, etc.)
